LIN Seminar: From Breathing to Behavior: Integrative Consequences of Intermittent Hypoxia in the Brain by Alfredo J. Garcia III, University of Chicago

September 27, 2018

4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Location

4289 SEL

Address

840 W. Taylor St., Chicago, IL 60607

Sleep apnea is a respiratory disorder causing intermittent hypoxia (IH) throughout the sleep cycle and is a risk factor for neurocognitive impairment. This seminar focuses on three objectives. First, to describe how IH-mediated variability in the respiratory network may increase the occurrence of apneas. Second, to examine how IH impairs synaptic plasticity to disrupt cognitive performance. Third, to discuss how IH impacts adult hippocampal neurogenesis. A unified working model of the mechanistic basis by which these phenomena are related will be presented.
