Abstract: I will discuss the topic of memory malleability as it relates to adaptive and maladaptive behavioral states. Emphasis will be placed on how dysregulation of neuromodulatory circuits due to stress can contribute to cognitive inflexibility. Specifically, I will focus on memory traces formed within the hippocampus and the potential therapeutic significance of developing novel memory modulation strategies using optogenetics to reset memory systems. These strategies are aimed at alleviating dysregulated signaling, restoring cognitive flexibility, and mitigating maladaptive conditioned behaviors.
